Ordering a linear actuator seems simple: You need it to move 100mm, so you order a "100mm Stroke" unit.
But when the package arrives, the unit is much longer than you expected! Why?
Understanding the difference between Stroke and Installation Length (Retracted Length) is the #1 rule of buying an actuator. If you get this wrong, your actuator simply won't fit.
Let's break down the three critical dimensions shown above.
A. The Stroke (The Movement)
This is what everyone focuses on. The Stroke is simply how far the rod extends outward.
If you buy a 100mm Stroke actuator, the rod will push out exactly 100mm. However, this does not tell you how big the actuator itself is.
B. The Retracted Length (The Space You Need)
This is the most important number for fitting the unit into your project. It is the measurement from the Rear Mounting Hole to the Front Mounting Hole when the unit is fully closed.
Visual Proof: Both units above have a 300mm Stroke, but look at the size difference!
Warning: This length changes depending on the model!
As you can see in the photo, an Industrial unit (LINACT-33P) is much longer than a Light Duty unit (LINACT-J) even if they have the exact same stroke.
- Light Duty (LINACT-J): A 100mm Stroke unit is roughly 208mm long when closed.
- Industrial Duty (LINACT-33P): A 100mm Stroke unit is roughly 300mm long when closed.
Always check the "Technical Drawing" on the product page. Never assume two different models have the same starting length.
C. The Extended Length (The Reach)
This is the total length of the actuator when it is fully open. It determines if your mechanism will hit the wall or ceiling when it opens.
Fortunately, you don't need a tape measure for this. You can calculate it with a simple formula:

Extended Length = Retracted Length + Stroke
Let's look at a popular size, the LINACT-J 200mm Stroke:
1. Retracted Length: 308mm
2. Plus Stroke: + 200mm
3. Equals Extended Length: = 508mm
